Trump's team sees Netanyahu as ‘madman'

The administration of US President Donald Trump increasingly views Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a 'madman' undermining Washington's diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, Axios has reported. Israel conducted airstrikes last week on Syrian government forces and military headquarters in Damascus, in response to bloody clashes between the Druze and Bedouin communities in southern Syria. A ceasefire announced on Saturday appears to be holding. 'After several bloody days in Suwayda Province, the Internal Security Forces have succeeded in calming the situation following their deployment in the northern and western areas,' Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab wrote on X. Despite the truce, US officials have become 'significantly more alarmed' by Netanyahu's behavior and policies, Axios reported on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter. 'Bibi acted like a madman. He bombs everything all the time,' the outlet quoted a White House official as saying. 'This could undermine what Trump is trying to do.' 'The president doesn't like turning on the television and seeing bombs dropped in a country where he's seeking peace and has made a monumental announcement to help rebuild,' the official added. On Monday, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump 'was caught off guard' by both the strikes in Syria and a recent Israeli attack on Gaza's only Catholic church. 'In both cases, the president quickly called the prime minister to rectify these situations,' Leavitt said. Netanyahu's office said on Thursday that it 'deeply regrets' the strike on the Holy Family Church, which killed three people, and pledged to investigate the incident. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the strikes in Syria were intended to protect the Druze population from atrocities.

EU urges Iran to return to nuclear talks immediately

Iran must resume diplomatic efforts immediately to reach a 'verifiable and lasting' nuclear deal, ministers from France, Britain, Germany and the EU's top diplomat told their Iranian counterpart, a French diplomatic source said on Thursday. 'The ministers also reiterated their determination to use the so-called 'snapback' mechanism — which allows for the reinstatement of all international sanctions against Iran — in the absence of concrete progress toward such an agreement by the end of the summer,' the source said after the first call between all the ministers since Israeli and US airstrikes on Iran's nuclear program in June. US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Tehran was hoping to engage in discussions with the United States, but he is in no rush to talk with Iran. 'They would like to talk. I'm in no rush to talk because we obliterated their site,' Trump told reporters after his arrival in Washington following a trip to Pittsburgh, referring to US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites last month.

Last-minute reprieve: Indian nurse's execution in Yemen postponed

Sanaa [Yemen]: The execution of 37-year-old nurse from Kerala, Nimisha Priya, which was scheduled for July 16 in Yemen has been postponed, following "concerted efforts" by the Government of India, sources told ANI on Tuesday, citing local authorities. According to the sources, the postponement provides additional time for her family to negotiate a mutually agreeable solution amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts by Indian officials as they maintained regular communication with Yemeni jail authorities and the prosecutor's office while navigating the sensitivities of the situation to secure this reprieve. "In the case of Ms. Nimisha Priya, it has been learnt that the local authorities in Yemen have postponed the execution scheduled for July 16, 2025," the sources stated. "GOI, which has since the beginning of the case been rendering all possible assistance in the matter, has made concerted efforts in recent days to seek more time for the family of Ms. Nimisha Priya to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the other party. Despite the sensitivities involved, Indian officials have been in regular touch with the local jail authorities and the prosecutor's office, leading to securing this postponement," it added. The 37-year-old nurse from Kerala was set to be executed on July 16 after a trial court in Yemen convicted her of killing a Yemeni national, a decision that the country's Supreme Judicial Council upheld in November 2023. Earlier on Monday, while giving the Union Government's submission on the case in the Supreme Court the Attorney General of India (AGI) stated that the Indian government is making every possible effort to help Priya. He further informed the Court that talks are ongoing with Yemeni authorities, including the public prosecutor handling Priya's case, to secure a suspension of the execution order until negotiations can be pursued. However, the AGI also admitted that the Indian government's ability to intervene is limited, describing it as "a very complex issue", adding, "there's no way we can know what's happening (in Yemen)." "There's nothing much that we can do... It's not like any other part of the world (where possible negotiations can be carried out)," the AGI stated.

Chinese Premier and Egypt's El Sisi call for stabilising Israel-Iran ceasefire

Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi emphasised the importance of stabilising the ceasefire between Israel and Iran during a meeting in Cairo on Thursday. The two leaders called for renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve regional tension and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace in the Middle East. The discussions also addressed the Israeli war in Gaza, with both sides underlining the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid. Mr El Sisi reiterated Egypt's position on achieving a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue, which remains a cornerstone of regional stability, the Egyptian presidency said. The meeting, part of Mr Li's two-day visit to Egypt, focused on strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations. The Chinese Premier delivered a message from President Xi Jinping, who described Mr El Sisi as a 'dear friend of China' and highlighted the long-standing ties between the countries. Mr El Sisi expressed Egypt's interest in deepening economic co-operation with China, particularly in renewable energy, electric vehicle production and infrastructure development. He praised the role of Chinese companies in Egyptian development projects, including their contributions to the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) and the New Administrative Capital. 'Egypt is keen to activate and deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership with China, especially as the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations approaches in 2026,' Mr El Sisi said. Mr Li reaffirmed China's commitment to expanding investment in Egypt, with a focus on enhancing the SCZone as a vital hub for trade and manufacturing. The zone already hosts more than 185 enterprises, with total investment of $3 billion. Discussions also touched on future Chinese projects in manufacturing and logistics aimed at further developing the zone. Egypt raised the topic of advancing debt swap agreements with China, a mechanism aimed at alleviating economic pressures while supporting development, the Egyptian presidency said. Also discussed was expanding tourism and cultural ties, with Mr El Sisi expressing optimism about increasing the number of Chinese tourists visiting Egypt. Last year, 300,000 Chinese visited and the launch of Air China's direct flights between Beijing and Cairo during Mr Li's visit is expected to boost that figure. Egypt has introduced Chinese-language services at major tourist sites to accommodate the growing influx. The meeting highlighted the growing alignment between Cairo and Beijing on regional and global issues. In addition to the Israel-Iran ceasefire, the two leaders discussed broader Middle East stability, including the need for sustained efforts to address food security and economic challenges in the region. Mr Li's visit reflects Egypt's efforts to diversify its international partnerships, particularly with China, as part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on traditional western allies.
